Director of Cumberland County Commissioners Joseph Derella
First elected Freeholder in November 2012, Joseph Derella is serving in his fourth consecutive year. In 2021, the title of Freeholder was changed in the state of NJ to County Commissioner, Joe's official title now is, Director of Cumberland County Commissioners. He also currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the New Jersey Association of Counties and recently served as the President of the South Jersey Commissioner's Association. Before being elected to the Board, Joe served for 15 years as a City Commissioner and Vice Mayor for the City of Millville. Derella also previously served on the Millville Board of Education as President, the Millville Planning Board, the Millville/Vineland UEZ Board, and the Cumberland County Improvement Authority Board.
He is a 1978 graduate of West Chester University with a degree in Health and Physical Education. Joe is employed by the Inspira Health Network and serves as Executive Director of Inspira Urgent Care and Occupational Medicine.
Joe’s civic engagement passion is mentoring Cumberland County’s youth, particularly at-risk youth, through programs such as the Cumberland County Positive Youth Development Coalition.
He is a member of the Elks Lodge #580, Shekinah #58, the Millville Kiwanis, and the Thunderbolt Hall of Fame Committee. In addition to his civic and service organization engagement, Joe volunteers his time mentoring youth as a Babe Ruth Baseball and Softball Coach. He has served as an American Red Cross Unit Volunteer CPR/AED Instructor since 1993.
Joe is a 2017 Walter Rand Institute South Jersey Public Sector Award winner, a 2018 recipient of the NAACP Community Service Award, and a 2018 Youth Alliance Community Service Award.
Joe is a life long resident of Millville, where he resides with his wife Susan, son Jake, daughter Casey and family dogs, Daisy and Lola.
